How Flip It Golf Works
Everything you need to know to start flipping.
Flip It Golf is a side game you play on top of your regular round. Two teams compete using coin-flip challenges called flips. When someone hits a great shot, the other team can risk a flip to make them re-hit it.
It's simple to learn, works offline on the course, and adds just enough stakes to make every shot matter.
1. Setting up a game
Creating a game
Open the app and tap Start New Game. You'll:
- Choose 9 or 18 holes
- Enter your course name (just type it — no database required)
- Invite players via share link or from your friends list
Forming teams
Games are typically 2v2, but you can play with any team sizes. Once everyone's joined, assign players to teams. Each team starts with 2 chance flips.
Who keeps score?
Anyone! There's no designated scorekeeper. Whoever has their phone out can log a hole result. It's like real golf — honor system.
2. The flip economy
This is the core of the game. Flips are your currency.

Spending flips
- Chance flip — Risk losing it if the coin doesn't go your way.
- Automatic flip — Guaranteed redo, no risk.
Make birdies, earn flips, use them strategically. Fall behind on flips and you lose your ability to challenge.
3. Calling a flip
After any shot — tee shot, approach, chip, putt — the opposing team can call a flip.
Chance flip
- Tap Flip It! in the app
- Select the player who just hit
- Optionally tag the shot type (tee, approach, putt, etc.)
- Watch the coin flip animation
- Result:
- REDO: That player must re-hit the shot
- CONTINUE: The shot stands, and you lose a flip
Automatic flip
Earned by making eagle or better. No coin toss — it's a guaranteed redo. Use it on the opposing team, or even on your own teammate who just lipped out a gimme.
4. Logging holes
After each hole is complete, log the result for each team:
- Double bogey or worse
- Bogey
- Par
- Birdie (+1 flip)
- Eagle (+1 auto flip)
- Albatross (+1 auto flip)
The app tracks running score as +/- par, not total strokes. Simple. Optionally, snap a photo of a great shot or memorable moment.
5. Works offline
Golf courses are notorious for bad cell service. Flip It Golf is built offline-first:
- Log holes without signal
- Call flips (client-side RNG when offline)
- Track scores locally
- Everything syncs automatically when you reconnect
No Wi-Fi? No problem. The app just works.
6. Settle up
When the game ends, tap Settle Up to see who owes who. If players have added their Venmo or CashApp usernames, you'll see one-tap buttons to open those apps directly. We don't handle any money — we just make it easy to pay.
No more "I'll get you next time" that never happens.
7. Tips for new players
- Call flips quickly — right after the shot, while everyone's watching
- Save automatic flips — they're rare and powerful
- Play aggressive when ahead — if you have more flips, use them
- Anyone can log scores — help out if you see a missing hole
